Mr Huang Meng, the honorable Mayor of Huzhou, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is an honour and a pleasure for me to address such a distinguished audience on this day when we celebrate the Joint Venture established between two nationally important manufacturing enterprises.
Economic relations between Finland and China are flourishing as never before. Bilateral trade is growing at the healthy rate of approximately 25 per cent a year. Direct investments from Finland to China are cumulatively at between 3 and 4 billion euro and there are encouraging signs of growth in this sector. We are looking forward to the first direct investments from China to Finland.别And with trade come increased communications, better mutual understanding and genuine friendship, based not on beliefs but on firsthand experience.
The basis for this development is laid in very frequent contacts between decision-makers in our two countries. The number of official, semi-official and non-official delegations and tour groups going both ways is staggering. All levels of Government and the economy are represented, from the provincial to the highest central Government level. Both Finnish and Chinese business leaders show their daring and imagination in formulating investment decisions.
Into this scene steps now Giant Kone Elevator Co., Ltd. At face value, the moment is most opportune. The construction industry in China is growing at more than 10 per cent a year, in spite of the Governments efforts to prevent the possible overheating of that sector. technological advances render the products, elevators, escalators and automatic doors better, cheaper and more reliable. The construction of public spaces like luxury hotels, airports and subways and spaces for retail trade like shopping malls is expanding and with it expands the demand for the products of our joint venture.
I am not a specialist in the field but on the basis of long experience in supporting Finnish business efforts abroad, let me say this: The manufacturing capacity of Zheijiang Giant Elevator and its knowledge of the markets in China, combined with the technological prowess of Kone looks like the ideal marriage.
I would like to mention, in particular, the extensive service business, which is included in this deal - 2500 elevators serviced annually. I have been told by knowledgeable sources that in the elevator and escalator business, service is the biggest moneymaker in the long run. To create a nationwide service network is therefore an important task.
The location found for the new joint venture, Nanxun District of Huzhou City, is an excellent choice. It combines the best industrial and commercial traditions of modern China with the sophistication and cultivation of the lifestyle of the wealthy merchants who used to live here in the days gone by.
On behalf of the Government of Finland, which I have the honour to represent in China, I congratulate the joint venture partners Zheijiang Giant Elevator and Kone Corporation on their far-sighted decision to establish a joint venture here in Nanxun, in the industrial heartland of China. I wish the new Joint Venture the best of success and hope that we will soon see the new enterprise at the top of the list of manufacturers in its particular field in China.
